It is understood to be an allegory of the contrasts between flesh and spirit, of love in its physical and religious dimensions. Paul Claudel (1868 – 1955) was a French poet, dramatist and diplomat. He was most famous for his verse dramas, which often convey his devout Catholicism. Claudel was nominated six times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
